Curious to hear what being on one of our herbal medicine courses in the UK feels like from one of our students in her own words? Sue joined the journey for year one of our intensive herbalism course - Awaken Herbal Wisdom - in 2024. Along the journey, her deep connection with herself and the rest of nature has unfolded in many beautiful ways. Read on to hear more of her experience.
What inspired you to want to learn herbal medicine?
I’ve always been drawn to the plants and flowers which surround me in my garden or on walks which show me the wonderful abundance of nature in its natural state. Over the years, I’ve collected many herbal books, drawings and paintings of flowers including some herbs such as lavender and roses which I paint as a form of botanical art. I’m drawn to their colour and fragrance and in turn their healing energies. I cook a lot and in doing so, I experiment with flavours by adding herbs and spices, so herbalism has always been coaxing and nudging me ever so lovingly towards learning its true essence, which is to heal and support our magnificent body; which is truly amazing if we learn to listen in and respond to its gentle and subtle ways.
I feel as the wheels of a year turn, so do we all in our uniqueness to engage and develop a relationship with that which has always been beside us and around us - gifts from nature to be developed and honed to secure our health and that of others in the journey ahead. What a wonderful opportunity to be of service to ourselves and towards one another.
Why did you choose to enrol on our herbal medicine courses in the UK?
To learn about herbal medicine is part of our very being. It’s likened to that of a seed planted deep within our very own DNA. It’s our very core and essence of being; that which is of nature and about nature, for we are all of this and come from this wonderful source.
To be awakened is to open our hearts and minds and in doing so, our soul to all of the natural resources we can commune with and work alongside with for the greater good. To tap gently into it energetically and to let it aid us all in our daily lives and when we need supporting is what has drawn me ever so closer to its magnificence. It’s amazing!
What did you most enjoy about your journey on our herbal medicine courses in the UK?
My journey has been one of immense joy, curiosity and wonder as Meghan has openly allowed us all to delve into the magical gifts herbs can provide and offer us; as forms of healing remedies and beautiful salves, oils, tea and tinctures. Meghan has held such a wonderful space for us to create and learn how to sow, harvest and make some truly soothing and healing products. Her tenacity to guide us along our herbal paths has been truly wonderful.
What most surprised you about your journey?
What surprised me was how my knowing that we are all so deeply connected to Mother Nature has been truly confirmed to me even more. How we can take from her unwittingly and unknowingly at times and in doing so, be unaware of what its hidden potential has already in store for us and at our fingertips. How humbling it is to know how much energy is all already there, which can enhance, rejuvenate or rebalance our own beautiful energetic bodies, both inwardly and outwardly.
How has taking our intensive herbalism course impacted your life?
This course continues to unfold within me as I learn to deeply appreciate what herbs truly have to offer us all. I’m learning to listen into the wisdom it can show us and to learn how it correlates so beautifully to our own being of becoming a more wholesome and holistic form of ourselves. Developing a relationship with the herbs is becoming key to me, towards a greater understanding of these amazing plants, as their energies and ours are already of oneness.
What's the one word you would use to describe how you feel having completed one year of Awaken Herbal Wisdom?
Love & Gratitude. I’m VERY grateful to have been led to such an amazing opportunity.
If you could share one piece of advice to someone considering joining our herbal medicine courses in the UK, what would you tell them?
I would encourage them to embark on this amazing journey about herbalism. If you feel led or called to do so, you’re making one of the best investments you could possibly make and that is in you. You’ll be consciously taking a wonderful step towards your own self-love, self-care and self-healing and this is the greatest act of love you can ever give to yourself and in turn to your family, friends and your wider community.
What's the next step for you on your herbal journey?
My next step is to embed and embrace all that there is to know and learn about herbalism. To begin to readily apply this knowledge on myself first and foremost, so then in turn, I may learn how to offer it in my journey ahead to others, alongside my journey to becoming an energy medicine practitioner, using wonderfully home-crafted infused oils to provide healing and relaxing massages for the body. It is my hope and trusted intention to offer others a healing, helping hand, which can use and apply the beautiful energetics of herbs to support their body from the inside out and the outside in, as Meghan so often quotes to us. Thank you Meghan for your amazing wisdom as we journey onwards with herbs and their unfolding wisdom together.
Meghan’s reflections on Sue's journey
Sue is one of those beautiful souls whose journey is such a delight to witness as it unfolds. Each step of the way, I have seen Sue exhale into the knowledge and skills she has been developing, connecting dots for herself both personally, as well as across the other holistic healing studies she has been exploring. I can see Sue loves reaching to the very depths of the meanings of each aspect of herbalism we explore, weaving in our examinations of societal messaging and old habits. I am so looking forward to seeing how her connection with herself, her cohort and the rest of nature deepen in year two!

At Rhodes Roots & Remedies School of Herbal Medicine, our practice of herbalism is rooted in the belief that we must remember, reclaim and relearn our knowledge of our bodies, our autonomy and how to work with plant medicine in order to bring control of our own health back into our families and homes for a sustainable future for ourselves and the planet. Through our intensive herbalism course, we facilitate the development of confident, empowered herbalists, attuned to the messages of their bodies and the natural world. Living the deep wisdom of herbal medicine within themselves, their homes and their communities, they uplift themselves and others, creating a stronger society organically. We do hope you'll join us on your journey!
